It's a Scot's word which can mean low cloud but, for once, the Scots language does do justice to the atmosphere of this brooding mist that peels off the forests. There is something mysterious about seeing cloud form from the damp woods.

The Gaelic neulaich means to become foggy or gloomy, to become obscured from sight, and comes from the word for a cloud, neul. That's more like it.

Nature is hiding herself in dampness.

That would be the summer then.
