U-Bahn München: 63/100 Münchner Freiheit
Munich Underground: 63/100 Münchner Freiheit
Münchner Freiheit underground station was among the first U-Bahn stations to be opened in October 1971 and was part of the first underground line in Munich. As it was always supposed to be an important junction of the Munich underground and the gateway to the network's only workshop - therefore seeing a lot of traffic - it was built with four tracks and two platforms from the beginning. Its role as a junction started, when the orange U3 Olympic line opened in 1972 for the Summer Olympics.
Originally, Münchner Freiheit underground station had a similar design as most of the other stations of the original blue U6 line, like the stations at Alte Heide, Dietlindenstraße, or Giselastraße, but with blue tiled pillars. During a major renovation in 2008/09 the grey wall cladding was exchanged for a yellow one, the light design was altered massively, and the ceiling was covored in reflective metal. All in all, the station has a brighter, modern, and more spacious feel now.
The station was named after the square above, and translates into English as 'Munich's Liberty'.
The tram station overground is another architectural highlight.
Münchner Freiheit is the last of the long list of stations beginning with an M. I'm not going to lie, all three station beginning with an N are rather dull. So prepare to be bored.
"Don't worry! We're perfectly safe." "Yes, a phrase, I find, that is usually followed by a lot of screaming and running and bleeding." - (Doctor Who, S9xE10)
