In town tonight

Like most cosmopolitan cities, the London skyline by night is enchanting.
I have been to quite a few around the world and each has their own identity, but few I think bear the stamp of the heart of London’s commercial skyline.
The  charm is very much generated by high-rise office blocks swathed in light by  their own internal lighting. Like London, you need a waterfront which provides a natural separation from the immediate foreground and at the same time offers the resource for an element of reflection.
Yet few capital cities can boast the attraction of early evening by the Thames., with the very same high-rise offices themselves silhouetted  against the failing early evening light, made all the more dramatic  by clearing skies dotted with heavy cloud.
I have seen similar skyscapes and witnessed the spectacular, almost theatrical effect of lighting on river and water frontages from Paris  to Rome, Seoul to Tokyo and the great commerce centres of the United States, but for me nothing quite matches the spectacle of London town.

From a distance, mind you. Being a country boy, the thought of actually working in one of those high-rise offices, fills me with dread.  But horses for courses!
