Worthy Winners

Today's lunchtime music at Heriot-Watt was taken up with the Rotary Festival of Youth Music Young Musician of the Year, organised by the Club in Currie and Balerno

We were treated to a variety of vocal and instrumental expertise from eighteen competitors from schools in the West of the county, so much talent it was difficult for the adjudicator, Steve King, to choose between them. We heartliy agreed on his choice of instrumental winner, Mark Elwis, from Inverlamond High School, who played a lovely delicate piece on the cornet; the vocal winner, Rebecca Pennykid, from Deans Community High School, showed a great maturity and control of voice. They will compete in the Area finals on 10th February. They are seen here holding their tropies.

The second place for instrumental, to our delight, was Kyle Rowan, from Firrhill High School, (which the junior Flums attended in their youth) playing a slow, thoughtful piece followed by a foot-tapping medley on the accordian, and in vocal a close second place taken by Emily Wishart, from Broxburn Academy.

I was quite taken by the pure voice of Niamh Coupar but she lacked the operatic depth of the winners, and Ben Scott's grace notes on the bagpipes were a joy to hear and watch his fingers on the chanter; I hope they will find success in the future.
