Not the Flying Scotsman!
For a while we have had today marked on the calendar as being the first mainline run of the over hauled Flying Scotsman. Last night we were disappointed to learn it had brake problems and was being replaced by 2 Stanier Class Black 5s. What we didn't learn was the route had been reversed.
So in the morning we spent an hour and a half hanging around with a dozen or so others waiting for the train to come north from Penrith. WHen we got home google revealed that while we were waiting for it on the west coast mainline it was on the Settle & Carlisle the route it should have gone south on. Sp after lunch we returned to out morning position not far from home and were rewarded by seeing this sight.
This is 44871 formerly known as Sovereign, but I can't find a modern name for it. Behind out of sight is 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier. Sovereign is marginally older than I am having been built in 1945 and withdrawn from service in 1968. The Lancashire Fusilier is even older being built in 1937 and withdrawn in 1968.
