As I was walking at Amwell Nature Reserve last week a golden glow amongst the dark, bare branches caught my attention. The afternoon sun was illuminating a loose flap of bark on, I think, a birch tree. I took the above top snap and then tried to better it but the effect of the light was fleeting.


I walked the same way this afternoon at a similar time but there was no sunlight. How drab and unremarkable that bark flap looks today.
