The rise and fall

Yesterday's rains have made their way off the hills, taking the established, acceptable, traditional routes down to the river and not by going through people's living rooms. Consequently, the Kent is up by - according to the generally agreed office estimate - six to eight feet. It's not quite covering the path on the far bank, although it will go over the top of the railing two or three times a year.

Further upstream, as the river passes through Kendal, the banks are higher,  so if the roads are wet today, it's only from the rain coming down and not the river coming up. Later in the afternoon, it will have already dropped a couple of feet.

I had a good day in the office, today, pottering about, doing a bit of paperwork, having a meeting or two. And when I got home, tempted though I was to lie on the sofa, I grabbed my swimming stuff and headed to the Whoop. But somehow it was already after seven and the pool closed at eight (earlier than I thought), so in the end I just went to Booths, picked up a few bits, and went home to read in front of the fire until it was time to collect Mr Tumnus from his final performance (of this show, at least).
