Peveril of the Peak...

The little building sits on one of the back routes out of the city centre. Many people don't know that it's there. It's just behind the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester's symphony hall and home to the Hallé Orchestra.

It's surrounded by much larger and grander buildings but more than holds its own with them. It's one of Manchester's old pubs called the Peveril of the Peak. It's covered with all these beautiful, glazed ceramic tiles. When Manchester was a centre of the old, dirty industries that beleched smoke and soot, buildings were covered in tiles so that they remained reasonably clean.

It used to be a coaching inn on the route from Manchester to London. Coaches would leave here regularly taking the old route to London along the A6. One of the next coaching inns on the route after this pub was in the village of Castleton in the Peak District. The pub was at the foot of a great cliff behind the village which was topped by Peveril Castle. Hence the Manchester pubs name, Peveril of the Peak.
