Making butter

C has a new Kenwood mixer which she brought along to our local school to make butter. Double cream was poured into the bowl, whisked with a K beater until the cream formed little lumps, the solids separating from the liquid. The mixture was drained leaving us with the solids - or butter. This was washed several times in clean water and finally in salted water, drained again and shaped by the pupils using butter pats.

At the same time a jam jar was half filled with double cream, a lid tightly screwed into place and by taking turns we all had a go at shaking the cream and to our surprise it thickened within minutes. We thought this would show it isn't always an easy job and a lot of effort was involved years ago.

Another great experience of working with this small group of pupils who showed great enthusiasm in the making and eating of butter. They gave it 5 out of 5.
The extra shows the thickened cream in a jam jar.
Tomorrow we plan to make griddle scones using the liquid from the butter.
