St. Mary's Dalton Holme South Dalton
This is the Church whose slender 208 ft spire
graces the landscape on the North Westerly
approaches to and some five miles from
Beverley. It was built in 1858-61 in the High Gothic
style of the 13th Cent. at a cost of £25,000 and
designed by the same architect who later designed
Truro Cathedral in Cornwall. The stained glass East
window portrays the last judgement and is by
Clayton & Bell representing work of their finest
period. The Church also contains a memorial to
Sir John Hotham (d. 1689) which was moved from
the old church depicting a knight in armour
reclining on a slab with carved supports at each
corner representing the virtues of truth, fortitude,
justice and temperance.
