No tempting fate

In fact the water is not that deep, but I still wasn’t taking chances at this ford on the River Blackwater on the Hampshire / Wiltshire border.
I’ve seen vehicles marooned in fast flowing water at fords like this before and on one occasion the car was actually swept downstream.
There is plenty of warning on this road and others like this that the roadway is liable to flooding after incessant rain where rainwater on the surrounding fields runs into the river.
Normally, the fords on the River Blackwater are pretty shallow and driving through is no problem. That could be a different matter today, and though the roadside depth gauge registers no more than one ft depth, that’s still sufficient to get into difficulties is you attempt to venture into the water.
One local farmer told me his tractor is at the ready to tow vehicles out should they become stranded. At a cost of course!  But then if you were stranded midstream you would no doubt be thankful to have rescue at hand, whatever the cost.

But for me, no chancing it today!
