Cumbria's very own breed of sheep, the Herdwick...
They have been living here in the Lake District for hundreds of years, apparently there are records of the breed written up in the 12th Century. They are tough and very resistant to disease and parasites, so can live well up on the fells without too much attention. They are greyish with white faces, but their offspring have deep browny black fleeces which change colour as they grow. The youngsters are taught by their parents which bit of the fells is their particular home patch for grazing, and they keep to that area with no need for fences etc. When they've got their full coat I think they look wonderfully cuddly, but this one has just been shorn and looks a bit scrawny!
Large will show you some boats and Derwentwater in the background...
