Walls and stones

We went up to Berwick-upon-Tweed and had a splendid walk round the Town Walls with views of the town’s three bridges, quayside and the River Tweed.

Then we went in search of the Duddo Stone Circle, which I had discovered. Finding the place was no problem, but actually getting to the stones was another matter.

It involved walking a kilometre through fields along very muddy tracks. Then a climb up another very muddy track to get to the Stone Circle. Definitely worth the effort though – an extraordinary sight. Five stones (there were seven originally) make a small diameter Bronze Age Circle. The position is stunning – they can be seen for a long way all round. This photo is looking West towards the Scottish border, only 4 miles away. Because of the soft sandstone chosen for the uprights, the stones have become highly figured from the effects of 4000 years of Northumbrian weather, with deep water-cut channels running down their faces. There are also many markings, which have been identified as man-made cup marks.

(I couldn't decide whether I preferred black and white or colour, so the colour version is an extra.)
