a lifetime burning

Millennial Treasure

When we saw my Dad yesterday, he mentioned that he had been "clearing out" the cupboard under the stairs.  The cupboard under the stairs was always home to coats, shoes, umbrellas, the vacuum cleaner, rechargeable torches, and anything else that did not have a better home elsewhere.  It is also where Dad has stored his wine over the years.

This was one of his discoveries - a 16 year old bottle of Gigondas.  I believe that there were a number of similar finds :-)

Since Mum died, Dad has lived on his own, and over they years the free surfaces in his house have gradually accumulated things: Dad puts stuff down, intending to find a home for it and never quite gets around to it.  At 84 he has a new lady friend, Mary, who is lovely and a very positive influence in his life.  I suspect the the discovery under the stairs owes something to her encouragement  ....

Cathy and I were the lucky beneficiaries of this particular bottle.  It has been a welcome treat on a windy, wet, grey, dim day.  Sadly, it does need drinking up.  But even so it is still wonderful stuff, although starting to tire.  Tonight, we dug out some fillet steak from the freezer (a remnant of the Christmas festivities) and had a very nice evening meal.  Cathy cooked a superb apple pie and, all is definitely well with the world, or as well with the world as you can be on a Sunday evening when you know you have a week of work starting the next day.  On the other hand there is an episode of War and Peace to look forward to shortly ...
