Cross Kirk, Peebles

There was already a religious community on this site when Joanna of Bourbon was born on 3rd February 1338.     She became the wife of King Charles V of France.

After she died on 6th February 1378 (two days after giving birth to her 9th child) the king was very upset. Her heart was buried in the convent of the Cordeliers, and her entrails in the royal necropolis at the Couvent de Célestins in Paris. The rest of her remains were then placed in the Basilique St Denis.
