Rain, rain, rain...

I saw a little piece in the latest edition of "The Ileach" (Islay's excellent community newspaper) this morning which revealed that the previous record that the island held of 89 consecutive days with rain which had stood since 1923 had been broken on the 1st of February.  I have posted a JPEG of it as my extra photo today.

That was on Monday and by my reckoning the total now stands at 96 as it has rained every day this week in Argyll (and presumably therefore on Islay ) and that includes today when torrential downpours have been accompanied by strong winds.

The stream beside our house has burst its banks again and everyone is fed up with this extraordinary period of bad weather and desperate for it to end.

It is caused, apparently by the very strong El Nino, which was probably also the cause of similar periods in the past including in the 1780s when Scotland and much of Northern Europe experienced crop failures and famines as a result.

For us it is just uncomfortable and unpleasant but alas there is no sign of a break as yet.
