Dead Wife's Grave!

In this area - but unmarked - is the spot where the Dead Wife was buried - at the junction of the parishes of Manor and Stobo.

The legend says that the Dead Wife was an Irishwoman who was a camp follower of the Highland army of Montrose.   This Royalist army had many Irish soldiers in its ranks, many of whom travelled with wives and children.   They were defeated by the covenanting army at the battle of Philliphaugh. (13th September 1645.)    The covenanters dealt cruelly with even women and children after their battles, though the story goes that it was the local people who killed many of those who had fled from Philliphaugh.
