Try praying
This is Charles. He has the most wonderful face and beautiful, gentle voice. As a young man, after finishing his studies at university, he asked God what he wanted him to do with his life. He suspected that God might quite like him to become a vicar but instead felt that the right path at that time was to become a hydro-geologist, a job that led him to many interesting places, as we found out today. Charles was eloquent and yet answered his questions with real vulnerability. Even though he is now a part-time ordained vicar with a particular remit for prayer, he says that there is still an agnostic in him when he prays. I think I know what he means. We pray to an unknowable God who at the same time made himself perfectly knowable to us.
Today we also spoke to a 97 year old man who prayed to God to restore his hair after it was burned in an accident as a child, an artist who prayed protection over her family during an armed raid in Honduras and a teacher who's favourite place to pray is on the toilet.
(I've added a couple of photos of the bench I photographed yesterday. It's looking a little bit different today).
