Epic
A friend Laila was given two Faith No More tickets this morning for a gig tonight and I jumped up to say that I'd go (I was a big fan back in the 90s). Laila was in a pencil skirt and soft shoes, but I must have had some foresight because I had my purple docs on. We met at Brixton and had a lovely bar meal before joining the vast throng of metallers at Brixton Academy. The support act was Martina Topley-Bird, who seems to be to be an odd choice to warm up a Faith No More gig. The crowd weren't paying her much attention at all, though her songs were fine and she was wearing a lovely dress.
Before Faith No More came on, the group of roadies brought in a whole florist's shop of flowers and proceeded to arrange them around the stage. Every so often a lady would come on stage and move a delphinium to another spot and a hydrangea to just over by the drums. It was most puzzling. Laila and I made up stories about the stage set ideas meeting.
When the band came on, they didn't do anything with the flowers so I think they must be purely for decoration (although we thought their perfume might be to mask the body odour smells of the band - just one of our idea-meeting theories). It was a fabulous gig, although I didn't know all of the songs. I did, however, discover that I know all the words to Epic, despite not listening to the song for more than a decade!
Thanks, Laila, for a fab evening. You rock (even in soft shoes and pencil skirt). I hope your foot recovers from being stood on by that drunk bloke.
