Marine Parade

Tree lined Marine Parade stretches for some distance along the seaward side of Napier.  The tectonic plate movement that  caused the 1931 major earthquake raised the beach front up by 2 metres resulting in a greatly enlarged area of shingle above the high tide line. 

The area has now been developed with gardens, lookouts, a sea wall, a sound shell and other tourist attractions. It is a great shame that the shingle beach is not very good for swimming but there is a steep drop which makes the waves  break and dump hard onto the stones.

It was a lovely place to sit and watch the surf roll in and listen to the roar of the shingle being pounded by the waves.
