The answer to Higgs Boson?

On Wednesday mornings I play bowls at CERN, which has been in the news a lot recently about particle physics and the Higgs Boson.
Most of the players are retired Nuclear Physicists, used to dealing with hugely sophisticated measurements and measuring equipment.
It may therefor come as a surprise to one and all to see how we measure which bowl is nearer to the jack....!
