House of Parliament

As I promised yesterday - I woke up early to get a picture with the sun on the north side of the house as can bee seen - the shadow on the side is of the Lutheran Cathedral and to the right are the old/new houses in this blip.

The Althing agreed in 1867 to build this house out of pure Icelandic rock to commemorate one thousand years of settlement in Iceland 1874.

You can just imagine what great a task this was for a nation of ca. 68.000 people. Well, they started to build it in 1879, same year as the French Revolution and finished it in the summer of 1881.

As I mentioned yesterday about 100 Icelanders worked there and learned to build houses out of stone.
