Now and Then
I have had this old black and white picture for some time and always wanted to blip it with a NOW picture and here it is - taken this morning. The name of the street is Vesturgata - West street.
The third red house from the left was once a famous restaurant called Naustið (The Boathouse, but Icelandic naust had no roofs) because they were the first to serve sour and rotten Icelandic food in 1958, like people ate in the old days and with this they started a tradition that begins on Þorri (Thorri) the old month that starts in the 13 week of winter - first day The Husband's Day and so on... The new house on the other side is an old peoples home.
On the other side of the road on the b/w is a house that resembles an old Icelandic sod house minus the sod, except on the roof - instead it is made of stone and therefore it is called stone-farm(house) or "stein-bær". This is a handicraft that ca. 100 Icelanders learned during the building of the house for the Icelandic Parlament in 1881 and used this knowledge to built their own houses. The house in the middle, a window close to the boys head is this red house.
You can see the house of Parlament here, but maybe I will take a better picture of it tomorrow and tell you more about it - right!
Location: Picture taken South East from point.
