Sea Wolves

Here we are in Punta del Este, Uruguay.  Today we took a catamaran out to Sea Wolves Island -- about 45 minutes offshore from Punta del Este.  This is a protected sea lion colony, and the rocks and the water are absolutely carpeted with these animals.  Mothers come here to give birth and to care for their pups at this time of year, and the young ones were having so much fun playing in the water!  There is also a large, historic lighthouse on the island, still under the care of a keeper who lives there.  The island is so named because when the first Spanish explorers came here and heard the cries of the sea lions, they thought they sounded like wolves, and were scared to land there.

Right now, Mr. W is off on a bike tour of the town -- I am interested to hear how he managed to keep his balance after all these days at sea!
