La Porte Dorée
Monday
Another grey day today, but at least it stayed dry. I walked with the walking group this morning around the grounds of the chateau. This is some of the detail of the frieze above the Porte Dorée. This was the principal entry to the chateau until the 17th century, and has a long avenue of lime trees, l'allée de Maintenon, leading up to it. It was built under François I, and bears his emblem, the salamander in the gold crest above the door. We were only a small group this morning - 4 of us - and it wasn't the most energetic of walks, so I decided to get a double dose of exercise today, and went swimming at lunchtime - so I'm feeling very virtuous now!!
