Saint Peter's Pennies

Here is the wonderful Max Adams - talking to Gordon during a little break in the lecture we were both at this morning.

This was the final lecture in the series about the Vikings and I wanted to catch him in action in some way, as he is the most charismatic, engaging speaker. We have thoroughly enjoyed each of the talks and now look forward to his book coming out.

The subject of today's talk was coins and currency in Viking times - fascinating what a single coin can tell us about the time in which it was used. Well, it can if you have the kind of knowledge this guy has.

No, he doesn't have white gloves on - it's the bright light shining onto the screen. I liked the informality of this picture and I think it captures his enthusiasm and engaging manner. I kept all the shadows and the bits of his presentation - the slide with the coin and his hastily scribbled coin weight comparisons, as I think they provide a context to the portrait.

And this is what we watched on the way home.
