Double whammie

There’s a tremendous storm raging outside. thunder and lightning and incessant, heavy rain. This has been the pattern most evenings for at least two weeks and is scaringly similar to the run-up to the January 2011 floods and landslides. It’s bringing trouble to someone, somewhere and has the potential to do very widespread damage (an area the size of Wales was affected in 2011). The double rainbow appeared just before the storm reached us.

It was a beautiful day earlier. Hot sun and much bird activity in the morning. The oropendulas came lower and closer than usual and I tried to catch a shot of them on the wing, but was always to slow – in fact, to catch them at all. Still, it was fun trying. When I took HH to the club, Dookie came along for the ride (haven’t told HH that he was sick all over the boot, as well as in the garden before we went. Some forbidden fruit he’d found – it looked like segments of jack fruit, but there’s none of that round here). At the club, found a great new place for birdwatching, but not when hanging on to Dookie’s lead with one hand and the camera with the other.

Pork and crackling for lunch, and that’s a first for us in Brazil. The cut was labeled ‘Filet mignon of pork’ and had a thick layer of fat on top. Not bad, though I had to crisp the crackling up a bit more after the joint was cooked. Supper was a chef d'oeuvre - discovered by accident, of course. With no cream or watercress for the Vichyssoise, I used coconut milk and fresh coriander instead - et voilá, Vichyssoise au style brésilien

The storm has finally blown over, and without the usual power cut. Better post this before the lights go out. The rain had stopped, but has started again, not quite as heavily.
