What I love about mythology is the blurred line between fiction and fact, a bit like this.
Dionysos is the ancient Greek god of the grape harvest who had a son called Stafylos which means bunch of grapes. (Well you would, wouldn't you, if you were God of boozing, name your son Bunch of Grapes)
Stafylos apparently lived, died and was buried here on Skopelos.
In 1936 his tomb was found containing a spectacular sword which now lives in Athens, just as the Parthenon marbles should.
Since ancient times the north end of this island has been famous for its wine, to the point that the ancient coin from here had a bunch of grapes on the flip side. This tradition sadly came to an abrupt end in the middle of the last century when Phylloxera wiped out the vineyards and the locals could not afford to re-plant with American root stock.
This house dates from that era, with its vast wine-vats still in situ. These are not a rarity in the derelict houses of the neighbourhood, you should come and see some day :-)
