Swarm

The new insect was first identified in May. By July, it was destroying fields and forests as it appeared in enormous, all-devouring swarms. Fundamentalists spoke of a new plague. Environmentalists described it in terms of forcing its way into eco-systems.

For two years, the insect devastated all manner of crops before disappearing as suddenly as it had appeared. The last live specimen was found six years, to the day, after the first.
