What lies beyond the gate?

I don't really know, I think it's just a bit of woodland. I discovered this hidden treasure on my before-work walk. Hmm, I thought, I'll just turn into this wee side street to vary my route, and the side street turned out to be a small estate of very big houses - relatively new builds I think, but  built in the 'Scottish traditional' style. As I went round, I saw a few more gates and fences in this same design.

The extra, commemorating a Dalkeith agitator who was shipped to the Americas,  was sited very close to the gate, but I'm not sure there is any connection, possibly the plaque has been there a lot longer than the houses.
