Asimina triloba

Stalking the wild custard apple.

Also called "paw paws" these strange plants abound throughout the creek bottoms and lowland oak forests of much of the southeast and midwest. The sole North American member of an otherwise tropical fruit family of South America they excite curiosity, and taste. Soft and custardy, a bit like a cross between banana and papaya with hints of vanilla when ripe.
