The two rock formations used to be connected by a mudstone bridge, and there was a third arch stretching out into the ocean, hence the name of this park--Natural Bridges. Of the three original formations, only the arch on the left remains, actually the middle bridge, itself eroding and fragile in spite of its massive appearance.
