The call of the running tide
SUNDAY
A two hundred mile round trip to Spurn Head on the east coast to see the newly restored six-storey lighthouse that has opened to the public this weekend after a half-million pound restoration.
The Grade II listed building, sits on the thin peninsular at the end of the Humber Estuary. The road to the lighthouse was washed away during a tidal surge in 2013 so the end of the spit can only be reached at low tides either on foot or by 4-wheel drive vehicle.
We lurched our way down the peninsular in the back of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Unimog vehicle.
By chance, we stopped off the Kilnsea Wetland Reserve and were fortunate to see an Egret, Curlews and Avocets (see extra).
