Fairfax Entrenchment
This is not an April Fool's day wind up it is really the Fairfax Entrenchment. I found it really interesting and it looks like Buster did too.
This is the third route I have taken in the St Ives Estate this week that has been unfamiliar to me yet it starts and ends on paths we use frequently.
Rose 54 Is a history buff and she directed our walk today crossing from the moor in the estate off Keighley Road. The route is paved with heavy stones and crosses a patch of open moorland above the woods.
General Thomas Fairfax was a Roundhead in the English Civil war and was 'known' to be living in Harden (Harden Hall) under siege for 6 months. The entrenchment was thought to be used during the siege and reputedly up to 200 men were killed and buried here.
The track is marked on the Ordinance survey map and although information on the area refers to it as legendary and only as a possibility a 'Time Team' exploration a few years ago seems to indicate there is something to it. It is also thought that the entrenchment could be based on Iron Age footings.
Great morning walk, thank you Rose.
