Away from the crowds
I try to avoid visits to shopping malls like Southampton's West Quay at weekends, but sometimes needs must.
At least if you pick your time, you can miss the busiest moments when I always feel shopping, even window shopping, becomes a chore.
Even so, the shopping mall was almost a relief after being caught out in a supermarket in a nearby town. I happened to arrive there just as prices were being reduced for perishable food nearing its sell by date. Two aisles were literally blocked by a throng of shoppers in search of bargains on food, anxious to save a few pence. I am afraid that's when I sought solace in the coffee shop next door.
In a sense then, the shopping mall provided a retreat, where at least somewhat to my surprise, there was a more relaxed atmosphere. Except at the one shop I wanted to visit where although busy at least there was opportunity to linger, examine the goodies I wanted to explore, and to be offered assistance if I needed information, or of course, buy. That wasn't on my agenda, but at least I could see, even touch, hold and examine the finer detail.
I guess it is all about familiarising yourself with the shops you plan to visit, and being equally selective about timing visits to your own advantage.
