Transformations
45 years ago the Ferrier Estate was built in SE London to provide much-needed social housing. Five years ago, when the shortage of social housing was even more acute, its run-down, weathered, concrete-slab buildings were demolished. It had become notorious for burglary and, especially after it was alleged that the Shoe Bomber had lived there, as a source of the sort of shock-horror stories that sell certain newspapers. Local terrorist training unit, anyone?
Well, I don't know, but I do wonder whether more support for the many vulnerable people placed there might have prevented the expensive demolition and the area's current transformation into a des-res area with water-feature-landscaping and homes on sale between £475,000 and £900,000.
The old primary school remains, protected at least for the time being by this fence. Its shapes and shades have been exercising me and I've put a muted-colour version in Extras if anyone would like to compare and comment.
A little text added to yesterday's for the few who may be interested.
