Story-telling
I was fascinated by Lee Miller: A Woman’s War at the Imperial War Museum in London today. I was so engaged in her reportage about women in the 1939-45 war (in Europe) that I kept forgetting to look at the pictures as 'photographs'. When I remembered and tried to critique them as photographs it felt self-indulgent, a bit pompous and not very relevant.
It reminded me that when I was studying design we were often told that our aim was to enable the message to be communicated in the most effective way possible, not to get in its way by creating something either feeble or showy.
So... story-telling.
