From cavalry officer to horticulturalist
My magnolia soulangeana at dawn this morning. It was first bred by Etienne Soulange-Bodin who had been a cavalry officer in Napoleon's army. He retired after the first exile of Napoleon and later became superintendent of the gardens at Empress Josephine's Chateau de Malmaison.
