Palmyra in London
For three days this week there is a replica of the Arch of Triumph in Palmyra displayed in Trafalgar Square. It was made referring to photos after the real arch was destroyed by IS last year. This one is two thirds of the size.
It's an interesting show of solidarity with Syria. But I can't help contrasting the reaction of governments to the destruction of Syria's extraordinary history with their woeful response to the situation of Syria's refugees and those still living in Syria and affected by the conflict. The arch in Trafalgar Square was unveiled by Boris Johnson from the same party who refuse for this country to take more than 20,000 of the 4.8 million refugees from Syria over 5 years and whose leader thinks it's ok to call desperate people living in squalid conditions in camps in Calais "a bunch of migrants".
There were too many people in Trafalgar Square for me to be able to get any shots from interesting angles with the arch and all of Nelson's Column. The extra shows one person who walked right in front of me to get his shot!
