Station Hotel Tile

Carrying on from yesterday, this is one of the numerous tiles used to to create the bottom freize within the entrance vestibule. I took a damp cloth with me the other day to clean a few off of all the muck and grime and found the manufacterer's name plate of 'Minton Hollins & Co' from Stoke on Trent

Michael Hollins became a partner in Minton & Co in 1840 and another chap, Colin Campbell in 1849. Whilst Hollins managed the tile business Campbell managed the china business and had little involvement in the tile business. In 1868 the combined china and tile company split in to Minton Hollins & Co the tile company and Mintons Ltd the china company each having the right to use the name Minton & Co for their speciality products.

The most famed and prolific manufacturer for most of the Victorian era their tiles were used in The Palace of Westminster (aka Houses of Parliament), US Capitol, Victoria & Albert Museum and many other prestigious buildings.

This is just a taster, more tomorrow.
