Carving on the entrance to Canterbury Cathedral

Caught the bus with friend H over to Canterbury today. It was very busy with lots of French and Dutch school kids about. H had never been to Canterbury before and so the Cathedral was top of her list, she paid her £10 and went inside. I have been several times before and remained outside looking up at the tremendous carvings above the gate - and indeed at the huge gates themselves (shown on additional photos).
Afterwards we went and had a look at the old pilgrims hospital and pondered on whether or not Chaucer himself might have stayed there - he being an administrator rather than a pilgrim, we decided had most probably stayed at home in London, leaving others to their weary toils.
Popped around the back of the hospital afterwards to look at the Franciscan gardens set up by the monks sent to Canterbury by St Francis of Assisi.
