Ashes to Water...

A very poignant day started with a 5.5 mile walk for us around Greenaway and then on the ferry over the River Dart to Dittisham and a trek along the Dart River Trail in some lovely but not too warm sunshine.  The flowers in the hedgerow are absolutely beautiful at the moment.  But that was not the main point of today.

We are in Devon for the scattering of the Ashes for my Auntie who died earlier on in the year, and her husband, Albert, whose ashes have ben sitting on top of my cousin’s freezer for 12 years now.  Today was the day for the ashes to be mingled and scattered across Torbay from under Berry Head.

First of all, there was a bench to be positioned and 8 of the 10 great grandchildren enjoyed sitting on it for a family photo – the other two little twin girls joined them afterwards but I failed to grab that shot – all of the children wanted to hold one of them so it got a bit chaotic at that point.  You can see Lily and Livia in the extras.

The children were also very keen to be involved in the scattering of the ashes on the sea.  My uncle moved from the Midlands in the seventies and taught himself to be a trawler fisherman and then a leader of sea angling trips.  None of the great grandchildren ever met him, apart from the eldest, Kyle, who had just been born when Albert died.  Hopefully most of them will have some memory of Vivien, their great grandmother, although they would not have known the beautiful and lovely auntie that I knew.

Everyone who wanted to assist, was able to share in scattering the ashes and it was a joyous occasion in many ways.

At the end, a local seal popped up to see what was going on…
