Replacement pump
13th May 2016:
At times, villages ask up to replace broken pumps fitted by others and left for years non functioning. This is one of those. They are all over Africa.
We asked the villagers to clean out the original well, made a new cover and installed our new pump.
The village is Thandanga, in the Dunduzu area and about 12 km from the factory.
It is only 3.8 meters deep and has 2.1 meters of water.
The 180 villagers were using an open source, pond. Sadly the furthest houses are 1 km away so some women and girls still have over 1km to walk. We believe this is too far, but at least the water is safe.
When the men get around to it, they will dig another well, shortening the walking distance.
In Malawi culture, women are not allowed to dig wells. If they could wells would be dug much more quickly, because its the women and girls who do the walking and carrying.
