Historical Plaque, Beccles, Suffolk
We're now in the rather lovely town of Beccles just over the border from Norfolk into Suffolk. There are lots of historical plaques on buildings around the town, relating what happened or who lived there at some date in the past. However we found this one the most interesting...!!
The extras are:
1) The Quayside at Reedham in beautiful morning sunlight earlier today
2) MrsC driving the boat (a rare occurrence - and I promise she wasn't zigzagging much at all this time!)
3) St Michael's Church, Beccles - which dates from the 14th Century. Horatio Nelson's parents (Rev Edward Nelson and Catherine Suckling) were married there in 1749. It has the unusual feature of a detached bell tower 28metres high (ie not the small tower on the left in the photo) which we may climb tomorrow for a view over the countryside.
PS Thanks to the info from Realgrumpytyke (comment below) I've done some more research. Seemingly these plaques were in the past on sale on Amazon and there's several round the country. There's speculation that "1782" is a typo for "1752" - I think actually it was 3-13th Sept which did not exist that year owing to the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar :-))
