Still life in Loutro
Loutro is one of the villages on the south coast of Crete that can be reached only by track or from the sea. We came here by ferry after descending the Imbros Gorge - the one Allied soldiers escaped down after the Battle of Crete. It's tiny, and mainly, it seemed, given over to catering for visitors, though there is clearly still some fishing done.
This rather splendid chess set was laid out in front of one of the cafés as if waiting for expected players to sit down. The sea is s clear green, and all the buildings white and blue.
We had coffee and apple pie, but dispensed with the chess.
