Full of hot air

My daughter is quite a chatterbox and has developed the ability to witter on and on and on. Most of the time we love her banal chat but sometimes we just have to tell her to stop talking (I know, what horrible parents). We read a book recently where one of the characters tells his friend a joke and she has become increasingly curious about jokes - it's actually quite a difficult thing explaining jokes to a five year old!

As we were walking to the British Consulate today (yes, we finally managed to make an appointment), O started wittering on about how fast she could count to 100; "Mummy, do you remember when Grandma was here and I counted to 100 so quickly?" To be honest I had no recollection of such an event but told her that I remembered. There was a slight pause before she said:

"I can count to 100 quicker than a hedgehog can cross that road!"

It was such an unexpected comment that hubby and I genuinely burst out laughing as it was her attempt at telling a joke. It was genius. It was also ammunition for O as she reveled in the fact that she had made Mum and Dad laugh, so for the rest of today we've had loads of comments about snails, slugs and rabbits crossing roads, with varying degrees of success!
