Blue Dasher
Pachydiplax longipennis
We were sitting around the pool discussing the lifespan of the dragonflies when just like that, one lit on the tip of my lilac tree! Of course I didn't have my camera with me so after a dash into the house I returned hoping to find him still perched. He did not disappoint me. Unfortunately, I didn't have shoes or my tripod and the ground around the lilac tree was a dangerous boobytrap of sharp sticks and roots with Max and Trio tripping me up as well.
The lifespan of an adult dragonfly is two months and that news makes me feel somewhat sad but also more determined to blip these little creatures when I spot them.
I'm very glad to have met the Blue Dasher as we had a nice albeit short, commune. When he flew away I couldn't help but wonder whether he'd find a mate somewhere in my little town. If not, at least he had a good nosh in my backyard! For a closer look at his two little fangs, please click here and for a sideview on flickr here.
