Elusive butterfly

Well, they're all elusive at the moment.

I headed up to Christian Fields, where there is always a good array of Small Tortoishells, Coppers, Peacocks, Speckled Woods and sometimes Red Admirals.  All that were there today were a couple of small whites and this obliging large white by the car park. Mind you, it was worth it in the end.

Christian Fields is a relatively new Nature Reserve on Eastern Avenue, the Lichfield Ring Road. It's next to a cemetery and is on the site of a reputed massacre of a thousand Christians.

There is rarely anyone there, but there are often traces of night activity (well bottles etc - as it is close to a less salubrious estate). Today there was one slightly odd man, mooching around with a docile dog. There was a squirrel that was making its escape, and a lone terrier which was heading off on its way.

The council gave the reserve a make over, putting in benches, wooden sculptures and a pond. The pond has now been abandoned and has grown over. The path had less than the usual amount of litter and rubbish and, miraculously, the wooden panels have survived.

It's a sombre place, although it's very beautiful in its overgrown and deserted state.
