Another early start this morning as we docked in Trondheim at 6.30 and had to fit in a tour of the city and cathedral before departure at 10am. The Nidaros Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Norway and it took 250 years to build as the Norwegians weren't experienced in building with stone and one of the Archbishops had to go to England to get some stonemasons to help out. The cathedral is dedicated to St Olaf who had quite a chequered history as a Viking Raider and a man who wished to further Christianity in the area. There was originally a small wooden church but when it was decreed that a bigger church was needed they built the new one around and over the old one which was then demolished!
I was very disappointed to find out that no photography was allowed in the church as apparently the pilgrims had complained that too many people were taking photographs. Fortunately, our guide didn't notice me half turned away from her with my camera at hip height sneaking this shot! I am rather pleased with it considering! The nave is relatively new compared to the rest of the Cathedral, all made out of Soapstone. It has two magnificent organs, I think the older one is the only organ made by organ maker Wagner to exist outside Germany now, and the other one, under the rose window - you should be able to see the silver of the pipes, is the biggest organ in Northern Europe and has over 9000 pipes scattered all over the Cathedral - it has a reputation for being rather difficult to play. I was very impressed with the beauty of the building. You can see the older organ in extras.
The rest of the day has been spent soaking up the sunshine and watching the sea pass us by...
EXTRA ADDED AT 22.00
This is as close as we can get to the Midnight sun just outside Molde! Need to sleep...
