'Somerset House'

Todays blip is taken of the Mairie (Town Hall) in our village. As you can see from the plaque above the top floor window, the building dates back to 1865. Within the walls of this magnificent structure is where all births, deaths and marriages are registered whenever they occur within the village. Requests for planning permission are also filed here. There is also the occasional marriage ceremony, about every 10 years or so! The building also used to house the village school, up until about 15 years ago when it was closed, due to a lack of children! As a result, they now have to take a bus to the nearest town, Etrepagny, about 5 kilometres from the village. The Mairie is only open 2 days a week.....Tuesday's and Friday's, and then only for 3 hours in the afternoon. Needless to say, there is not very often a queue. The building is currently under going a complete face lift, due to it's poor condition. Renovations have so far been made to the roof and all the plumbing and electricity has been reinstalled. There is also a new front door and the brickwork and paintwork have been given a fresh leash of life. It is intended that the building will continue to be of use to the inhabitants of our village for another 150 years! At least we know where the council tax is going. Have a nice day everybody and a great weekend.
